Dexterdyne Simple Search Port - Version 1.0.x86 This is a new x86 / NT / W2K Simple Search Spider port for Matt Wright's most excellent Simple Search for Unix.. Please review the x86README.TXT file in the zip file download above carefully before installing.. This new perl based Search Spider for Windows OS servers has been developed
using ActiveState Perl 5.6.1 for windows.
It should operate on any windows based web server
with Perl installed.
General Overview: Matt Wright's original Simple Search Script was written to allow people to set up a search spider for their site, so their users could enter keywords and find all
documents matching those keywords. It was written to be simple, so there are not many options. When the search returns pages, it returns them in no real order, and they are referenced with the <title> tag of that page.
While there are more advanced versions of this original script in production at thousands of sites worldwide, the factory original script this port is made from is - extremely - undemanding in terms of server resources - the great challenge of W2K Webservers..
Our Dexterdyne x86 port has also been undertaken so as to retain all of the functionality and public documentation of the UNIX original (save the chmod requirements) and thus - it allows the x86/NT/W2K server admin as wide a
public information base as possible..
Again - as this is a freebee for the greater Windows 2000 server community - we would very much appreciate any further technical details or feedback you have so we can beef up this overview page for the next webmaster who happens by..
W2K/NT/x86 Considerations:
General x86 Perl: Update your permanent system path statement to include access to perl and wperl bin directory as per ActivePerl instructions
ie: path=C:\perl\bin\;
There are several acceptable variations - however in x86/NT/W2K environments the path statement method is usually advisable for x86/NT/W2K perl
executables..
Calling Perl Interpreter: Assuming you have taken the above advise - there should be no need to revise the default Perl interpreter call in the first line of x86search.pl
However - please address your Perl interpreter as appropriate to your system if you have declined the advised path statement outlined above..
Locally installed Netscape 4.+ Hangs:
For reasons I believe are related to mime type exclusions in netscape 4.-. Dexterdyne Simple Search Port hangs when triggered from a locally installed Netscape 4.+ copy running directly on the server CPU you are searching..
Please try your explorer or netscape 6+ or Opera browser if testing script locally on the server CPU - BEFORE e-mailing me to complain..
This hang doesn't present in netscape 4.+ (or any other browser) remote to the server CPU - and doesn't present if testing locally using alternative browsers
